Our school is one of those type of places where it has an unnatural history. No body really knows the sequential past of our school, so different people make up different rumors. Some people said that it was an old hospital, while other people say that it used to be a mausoleum. Stupid people go around saying, "Oh, there's dead people in the walls and some day they are all just going to fall out." Usually students and staff just tell them to shut up and don't get your hopes up too high. Because personally students think that kind of stuff is really cool. I don't really blame them, mostly because I am the head of the UIT. UIT stands for Unnatural Investigation Team. My name is Jacob. I am in the team with Zack, Roary, and Hannah. I am the leader of UIT because I am the strongest yet smartest one of the group. Surprisingly, Roary is the bravest one of us all. She has a strong mind and is very dedicated to whatever she is doing. Zack, the second male in the group, could care less about school work. He only has a heart for investigations. He has great passion for mysteries and just plain everything else that doesn't involve learning. Next is Hannah. Well, Hannah is...uummmm....well, Hannah. She is the biggest girlie girl in the whole entire world, except when it comes to something scary. She is always in for the chill. She takes everything well, except spiders. One time, in fourth grade, a little baby daddy long leg crawled into the school and she started to scream like a crazy maniac on the loose. She screamed and cried, and you won't even believe this, but she wet her pants. She had to call her mom for immediate dismissal. She had to take therapy for two weeks. I, Jacob Heldsworth, would say that I am a pretty good student in school. I get A's and B's and occasionally C's. The only subject that I ever get C's in is Social Studies. And the only reason I would get a C in Social Studies is because I always skip ahead in lessons and the teacher just doesn't appreciate that. I really don't know why that's such a bad thing. I have dark brown hair that kind of acts as my own personal visor. I absolutely am against the whole bangs over the eyebrows thing a lot of people do. I just don't like it. I have blue eyes, too. I like to play basketball, football, baseball, and soccer. A lot of guys just play one or two sports, but I like the real deal. Zack has dirty blond hair and brown eyes. He has a pair of glasses that he wears to see far away. He likes to play golf and baseball. He's pretty smart I would say. He gets straight A's all year around. His worst grade he has ever gotten is a B-. He likes to hang out at the Cafe down at Shaw Street. For a fifth grader, it's very unusual that he loves to drink coffee. He drinks black, though. Every one else except for me likes coffee, but black is too bitter for every one else. He also has hair like me, the personal visor. He hates peanut butter, and is allergic to lime and mint. He's pretty cool, and has known me since I have been a baby. Roary has light brown hair and hazel eyes. She is a perfect student and has perfect grades and perfect attendance. She is amazing at sports also. She plays football and does swimming. She is a pretty big tom-boy. And now, in this new school, we are aloud to wear hats, and she just loves hats. Her regular outfit is a t-shirt, a baseball cap, and a pair of jeans. Her parents are divorced, which isn't so bad because her dad moved into the city, so their apartment was right next to the Cafe, which was our regular meeting place. She is addicted to coffee. She usually takes those "Jump for Heart" water bottles and fill it with coffee and brings it to school. The funny thing is is that she never gets caught drinking it. Next, there is Hannah. Hannah is a pretty big girlie girl. She does cheer-lead leading and tennis. She has blond, curly hair and she has green eyes. But the weird thing is is that she never wears her real hair. She wears different colored wigs every single day. Every once and a while she will wear her hair down, but it's not that often. She usually wears dresses and skirts, but when it comes to investigating she dresses all raggedy. It truly is funny. It's kind of odd for a person like her be so into getting into investigations like that because she is just so girly otherwise. She gets pretty bad grades in school. I'm talking like C-s and D's. Her highest grade ever was a B+ and she celebrated for two weeks. It got old fast, but you got to love her! Our school starts in October, and gets out in late June. This is a new school, just for fifth graders. Last year, fifth graders got out of school on June 28th. The bell rings at 7:50, and the afternoon bell rings at 3:00.weird. The school's formation is really There is a little pond right in the middle of our school. It has a dried out fountain on it and all the water is really mucky. You can't even see the bottom. They say that the pond was man made and was originally 2ft, but the pond has been there for about 200 years, so no one really knows how deep it really is. There is a big gate circling it because they don't want any one getting into it. Do you think they can climb up the gate? Not a chance. It goes all the way to the top of your ceiling. Right now, I can't get to sleep because I keep thinking about the first day of school, which is tomorrow. I kind of have a bad feeling about the first day. I don't know why because everything was going smooth until now. I just feel like it's not going to work out. When I wake up, I am getting dressed and then riding my bike to the Cafe to see my friends again. ************************** It's the morning of my first day of school, and I am headed to the bathroom. I grab my hair brush and brushed my hair repeatedly in equal amounts of time. I looked in every square inch of the mirror. Worrying about everything that was going to happen today, I panicked. I didn't even know what was going wrong with my day, but it was just terrible. I went out to the garage to grab my bike when I heard a loud bang behind me. I turned back to see what just happened. Nothing was there. When I turned back around, I saw a stack of instructions fall down out of the corner of my eye. I turned back around to all the instructions sitting a neat pile of papers on a chair. "Okay," I said. I started to ride my bike down into Shaw Street. I passed the Ups Man and came up to the Cafe. Hannah and Zack were sitting in the window. They waved at me and I waved back. I came to the door and the little bell tied to the top of the door went DING! "Hey!!!!", Hannah yelled at me. "Hi. Hey Zack. How long have you guys been here?" "About an hour." "An hour? That's crazy. Where's Roary?" "She's on her way. She stayed at her dad's house last night so she could get here quickly. I don't know what's holding her back." "Oh well speaking of Roary, here she is now. Hi Roary!" "Sup guys. How ya doing?" "Fine. Good to see every one is still glued together, huh?" "Here, I'll go up to the counter and order coffee with you." "Yep. Okay." "Do you guys need any more coffee?" I asked. "Yep!!!!!," Hannah said with great excitement. "Yeah yeah we'll see." We returned to the booth with 2 espressos and a vanilla cappuccino. I sipped on my hot chocolate frantically, thinking about walking into that old building that they call my school. "Okay, guys," I said, "we need to head out to school or else we'll be late. And who would want that on their first day of school?" "Agreed." said Hannah and Roary. "I'm going to go get my bike and head out. See you guys at school." I walked out to the bike rack and unlocked the handcuffs that kept my bike from getting stolen. I put the handcuffs in my pocket and started to ride down to Willow Bay. Willow Bay is a little town on the edge of New Jersey. It's right on the shore where all the neat stuff that people loose in cruises washes up. One time Roary found someone's ID and a pair of pants. I honestly don't know how a guy could loose his pair of pants, though. We go there every October and camp, just us four kids. It's been like that since 1st grade when we ran away to do it. Now, it's just kind of a tradition. This year, we are going to go on Friday, the night of Halloween. Some people say that the shore is haunted by people who died on sunken ships. We thought it would be pretty cool if we checked it out on Halloween. We all arrived at the school at about the same time. I have seen this school before, actually I saw this school every day. Last year, I rode the bus, and our bus route passed the school every single day. But I never really saw the school up close, like I never really looked at it. But now that we were here, it was incredible, yet really creepy. It was also falling apart. It was a dinosaur! It was truly amazing. "Wow." Roary stated. "Eeewwww!" Hannah exclaimed. "That's gross. I bet there is tons of spiders in there." "Relax. Every thing will be fine." Zack said. "Oh fine. Oh my gosh! Look at that cute little puppy!" She ran up to the third step. We all exchanged looks. "What puppy?" I asked. "I don't see a puppy. Do you see a puppy? Guys, I don't see a puppy!" " I don't see a puppy either. I think she has finally hit the coffee overload. She's going crazy." Zack declared. "Awww, that dog is so cute. What is it?" Hannah asked the thin air. She stopped talking for a minute and then said, "Oh, that's cool. I have always wanted a morkie. They're adorable. Do you work here?" There was another short pause, and then she said, "Kind of? What's that supposed to mean?" "Guys, I am going to get her," I said, "this is scaring me." I walked up to her and asked, "Who are you talking to?" "Oh, this is Jonathan, and his little puppy Kex." She declared without turning around. "Uuuummmm, Hannah, there is no one there." "Well, sure there is," then she turned around. "Well, they were right there. I don't know what happened to them. They must have run off." "Okay, if you say so." "Let's just go inside." "Okay, sure." All of us walked inside and admired everything in the school. There was beautiful calligraphy boarding the top of the wall. It was stating all the school rules and respectful choices and things. There was a perfectly circular gate from the floor to the ceiling. We walked over to the gate and the "pond" really wasn't a pond. It was a murky pothole that was filled with water. It was pretty gross. The school was low on money, so they had no time or money to replace the walls and ceiling, so they walls are about to fall apart and the locker wall is the wall. They said that it wouldn't be a big problem because none of the walls in the school were hollow. " Guys, I think that we should go to the office to request locker numbers. Maybe there is a row of lockers still available." "Good idea. Let's go guys."
"Excuse me, we were wondering if we could have an extra row of locker numbers." "Well, let me see." The lady had a voice that sounded like she was pinching her nose when she talked. There was a short pause, and then the lady said, "Yes, it appears that we have about nine free lockers in a row. How many are you looking for?" "Just four, thank you. Uuuummm, where are these lockers again?" Hannah asked. "They are right outside of Mrs. Trew's class." "Oh that's even better. That's our homeroom teacher. I wonder why no one wants the lockers outside of her class?" We walked out of the hall way and looked at the student map that Zack got out pg the office. We made our way to the end of the hall, past the pond and to Mrs. Trew's class. We walked into the classroom and we looked at the students. I saw a couple of familiar faces from last year's school. But all the rest of the students were new. Wow. The people seated looked like prisoners. I heard that Mrs, Trew was really nice. I didn't know what they were so worried about. "Guys, cut the tension! You guys are freakin' us out. What's the big idea?" "Mr. Hollerday?" There was a strict voice that sliced through air like a Swiss Army Knife. I turned around to see a tall teacher with dark brown hair put up into a bun in the back of head. She had blue eyes, that reminded me of a swamp. "Yes?" " I will kindly ask you to sit down so we can commence class." "Sure whatever." I turned around slowly to see that all of my friends had sat down when I was having my little chat with the "teacher". I walked to the front of the room where Alex, Hannah and Roary were sitting. I took a seat next to Hannah, which was at the end of the row in the walkway. I sat my back pack down beside me and looked at all my friends sitting next to me. They all got the worried look on their face, too. I was wondering if I didn't catch the new fashion buzz; look worried on the spot. "Is she our teacher?" I whispered to Hannah. "Yeah, I think so." she replied. "Why is every one so worried?" I asked with reason. Then she pointed to something and I found out why. Her arm was chewed up and bleeding. Like it was really creepy. And I don't know how I didn't catch this, but the tips of her hair were on fire. They weren't really on fire, it was just kind of glowing and smoldering. When you looked into her eyes, they looked kind of hollow. They weren't really actually hollow, it just gave you a funny feeling. "Uuummm, excuse me, but, uumm, are you Mrs. Trew?" "No. I am Miss Deller. I will just be-" "Good morning class. I am so very pleased to see so many smiling faces. Familiar too. I will be your homeroom teacher for the year. My name is Mrs. Trew." I was very confused when she walked in. Every thing was spinning around in my head. I turned around to expect to see Miss Deller, standing at the blackboard, but when I turned around no one was standing there. It was pretty weird but I just dropped it. The class was an ease. We just talked about how our summer went and what we liked to do on our free time. Just regular first day stuff. Mrs. Trew was very nice and full of life. She made class fun and time fly. But like I said, time flew, and before I knew it, class was over. I walked out of the class, talking to Hannah. "Hey, Hannah. What was up with that crazy teacher Miss Deller? She was a little creepy, wasn't she? I didn't know what was up with her. But finally Mrs. Trew came in." "Who's Miss Deller?" "Miss Deller." I repeated. "The teacher who yelled at us at the beginning of class," She acted like she didn't have a clue what I was talking about. "All I know is that nice student teacher named Miss Liot. The one who picked out that extra row of seats for us." "What are you talking about?" I asked. "What are you talking about?" She copied. "I don't know! Okay, we clearly are out of our minds, so let's just ask Mrs. Trew who was her helper today>" "Good idea." We walked back into the class room and went up to the teacher. "Excuse me, but did Miss Deller or Miss Liot teach with you today?" "None of them did. Where did you get such silly names like Deller and Liot? Just save whatever you're doing to prank the lunch-ladies. They don't mind what you say to them. They're like those men in England who don't talk, no matter what you do to them! Oh those guys are great!!!! Run along now!" "I think Mrs. Trew is the one who's out of her mind," Hannah declared. "I agree!" "Come on, let's just go to library. When lunch comes around, call a meeting at the picnic tables at the front of the school. That way we can have a little chat about what has gone on in class. Maybe they had something happen to them, too. Alright see you later, Jacob!" I walked through the lunch line, waiting for my food to be served. How long does it take to make a turkey sandwich? Oh well. After the dilemma in the cafeteria, I walked out the door to the court yard with a half eaten sandwich and french fries. Every one was seated at a round picnic table under a swaying oak tree. "Hey guys!" Every one had a disappointed look on their faces. "What's the matter?" "What's the matter? I went home to get lunch and the garage was demolished. All our equipment was crushed!" "Well, Roary, who could have gotten into your garage?" "Well maybe my college neighbors who were up all night throwing a party." Roary didn't live in a very good neighborhood. After her parents got divorced, her mom lost her loan and has had Roary's dad pay the rent ever since. Her dad really wasn't a man with a lot of money either, so they got stuck in a crappy neighborhood. "Well, how could have they gotten in your garage?" asked Zack. "Yeah, how did they get into your garage?" Hannah repeated. "Oh, I don't know. Maybe they got into it because our brilliant leader Jacob over hear insisted on leaving the door unlocked so we could get in easily after school. Mr. Genius ruined our studio." "Wait, how is this my fault?" "You left it unlocked!" "Well just because one person makes a decision doesn't mean that the other person has o follow along." "We made you leader because we needed one. If you want us all to be independent and not a team then why are you leader? If you want to be one, act like one!" " Oh, fine." " So you admit that you did it!" "I didn't do it. Her neighbors did it. I'm responsible for the damage." "So you did it." "Whatever." Zack had been quiet for the whole conversation, but now his face was flaming. Steam was literally shooting out of his ears. "YOU DIP! MY WHOLE AUDIO SET WAS IN THERE. THAT STUFF WAS WORTH THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS! YOU NEED TO GIVE ME ALL THAT MONEY BA-" "ZACK! Calm down! I'm sure you will get all your stuff back. Roary, do you have any evidence to give to the police?" Hannah asked. "Yeah, what about evidence. If you find who did it, I bet you can get some extra bucks. That will pay off your stuff, Zack." "Yes, that's a great idea. You would at least get a couple hundred dollars. It's better then having to buy every thing over again." "Do you have insurance-at least?" " Yeah, I do. I'll check into that when we get home." "Okay. Well, now that that's all covered, I call this meeting to order. We are all here to discuss what happened during class today. Today was really creepy, but first I must ask what every one saw today." "Uuuum, well. I, Hannah, saw a woman named Miss Liot." "I, Jacob, saw Miss Deller." "I, Zachary, saw Mr. Hensen." "I, Roary, saw nothing." We all looked at her i concern. "You saw nothing?" I asked. "I saw no thing. Nothing at all. I personally think that all of you guys are crazy." "Well then, I guess the only way to identify any body is to live through it again." "Live through what?" Roary asked, a little paranoid. "Okay never mind. Zack, go ask the teacher if we can go inside for recess to investigate the place while I go sneak in and go get some equipment." I walked further down, looking for an exit. The hallway seemed to keep expanding as I walked further. I thought I heard a door slam, followed by laughter, but I pushed that thought aside. I finally came to the end of the hallway, finding nothing. I put my head down and started to walk to the door I came in with. When I lifted my head to an empty wall. No door! Where has the door gone? How do I get out? How long will I be in here. I sat against a locker. Banging my head on it. I started to cry. I was alone without my friends, swallowed up by the school. I started to scream! As loud as I could. I got up and started to run around, banging on the walls and lockers. I stood there for 5 minutes staring at the wall where the door used to be. Someone tapped on my right shoulder. I turned a round to see an old man with glasses and white hair. Then I saw all the lockers open and people's heads and bodies pop out. The old man looked at me and said how ever politely, "May you keep it down there, sonny? People here are trying to get some sleep. We have a big day tomorrow." "Uuuuummm, yeah, sure." "Now may ask you, sonny, why are up so late. You should be getting some rest. Any ways, goodnight." He walked away slowly, gradually turning into a faint mist. I couldn't believe what I just saw. The locker doors shut with a big slam, whipping the air. I faced the wall again and started to bang the walls so hard. (They had to fall apart some time soon.) I kicked and screamed, hoping not to disturb the people in the school, but outside. That little conversation about 5 seconds ago keeps on circling around my head, was he a real ghost. I have never actually seen a real ghost, so I still can't make up my mind. If it wasn't so random and awkward, it wouldn't be bothering me this much, but it was just so random and so awkward it blows my mind! I banged on the lockers and yelled "Come out come out, wherever you are!" I did this repeatedly until the wall opened in the shape of a door. Roary and a teacher walked into the deserted part of the school. "ROARY!!! " I ran up to hug her and she had a very strange look on her face. "What the heck are you still doing in here? We told you to go in here 2 hours ago. School's already over. You must be really over heated. We need to get you to the nurse's office while we call the ambulance." "What? I haven't been here for 2 hours, I've been in here for 20 minutes! You guys weren't listening and the door wasn't there! I'm not over heated, I am fine! Just, I just want to go home and lay down." "well, you have an incredible fever, we need to take you to the nurse at least." The teacher declared. "Fine." "So why didn't you get out, we did some pretty cool stuff." "I already told you. I couldn't get out because I was trapped. An old ma-" BOOM! It's not what you think, I didn't get shot or anything, I only fainted. That's all. Too bad I couldn't tell her about thew old man. At about 5 o'clock, I was laying on my couch thinking about what had happened. There was no way I was in there for that long. But when you think about it, hhhhmmmm, I'm thinking, and well yelling and screaming does not take up that much time. But it wasn't being locked in the school for 2 hours that bugged me, it was all the people staring and talking to me about being quiet and being up so late. They were peaking out of the lockers like they would with a door to a hotel room or something. Hey, I don't know, but I am just glad that they gave some medicine to cool down and make me fall asleep because I was sure going crazy. Well, the medicine worked and there I was, dead asleep on my living room couch. I woke up in the middle of the night to a dark and empty room. I couldn't really see what room I was in, but it became more clear that this was my very own bedroom when my eyes got adjusted to the dark. I felt kind of wierd, like things crawling all over me. I got out of my bed and shook my body to get the feeling off. I walked over to my door where I heard some body say, "Don't open it" in a very faint and scratchy voice. It was a whisper. The voice was unfamiliar and I was scared. I turned around, expecting a complete, strange, weirdo standing at my window, but the sight was a free of weirdos crawling in my window. I ignored what had to be my evil conscious and opened the door. Nothing was wrong. I opened my door to my regular hallway, except it was darker than it usually is. Walking down the deserted hallway kind of freaked me out at first, but then I realized that it was actually kind of nice, without my little sister singing her show-tunes. My little sister is always being a pest. She is always singing little kids songs to practice for her Kindergarten Concert. She has one of those Barbie Radios that she carries around the house and sings into the plastic microphone. It bugs me so much, I just sometime s wish that she wasn't around. Well this my alone time, so I'm going to enjoy it. I walked back into my bedroom and grabbed my cellphone sitting on my end table. I put it in my pocket and headed down the hall-once again! The hall seemed more empty than it has ever been. I never really noticed it, but we have a really big house. My house it looked like a mansion, when it was all empty at least. The hallway looked like one of those hallways in hotels in the scary movies. I am dead serious, there were 4 doors on the right and four doors on the left. I walked down the stairs, trying not to make the steps squeak as bad as they do during the day. Once I reached the main floor of my house, I tip toed to the kitchen and opened my fridge. I grabbed a peach yogurt and sat down at the bar. I turned on the computer and turned the volume all the way down. I slowly finished my yogurt and threw it away in the trash. I went on a couple of websites and then turned the computer off. I tried sleeping, but it didn't work, so I moved over to something more comfortable to sleep on, like the couch. I turned on the TV and closed my eyes. I guess I didn't really realize how tired I was and was asleep for a long time. The next time I woke up my phone read 4:13. I sighed and closed my eyes again. The second I closed my eyes, my phone rang. It was Roary. "What do you want, it's 4 in the morning!" "HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!" "What, where are you? - Hello? Hello?" No body answered the phone. Oh my gosh! Is Roary in trouble????? I don't know but I got to get to her as fast as possible. But what about my parents, and sister? I'll leave them a note! Yes, I'll leave them a note. Okay. Let's not panic here, Jacob. GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER!!!! Okay! Phwew! I wrote a note as fast as I could. I put it on the fridge and slammed the door behind me. I grabbed my dirt bike after I moved some clutter out of the way and pulled the motor. I got on and put in neutral, then reversed it, and then drove it down the street. I got another phone call, so I had to brake and look at the picture. It was Hannah. "Hello?" Hannah shouted on the other line. "Hi hi Hannah!!!! Have you heard about Roary?" "Yes! i just stopped by your house to see if you were there." "You woke up my parents? I was trying to keep them asleep and not to worry about this. The last thing they need is this right now. You know how my parents have been acting with their jobs and the house and everything. Know you made them worry about my friend! Gees, wait to go, Hannah." "Sorry! At least your sister didn't wake up, or we all would be in trouble." Well, do you know who's house she was staying at?" "Yeah, she's at her mom's house." "Okay, I'll be there in a sec! See you there." "Right, I'll see you there, too." I hung up the phone and shoved it in my back pocket again. I pressed on the gas and drove on my way to Roary's mom's house. When I pulled into the driveway, I noticed that her mom's car wasn't in the garage. This actually happens quite often, when her parents don't stay with her when she goes to sleep, they often just leave her alone while they go to one of those places where single parents look for a perfect match. I ran up to the garage door to see that it had been beaten with a bat or something metal, and it was dented really bad. The door from her garage into her house was wide open with dents as well. "Oh no." I said to myself. I walked through her house very slowly and quietly just in case there was still somebody in here. "Hello?" I shouted, some what quietly. "Hello?" I repeated. There was a hammer like noise coming from the basement. I ran down there to see Roary laying there in a great deal of pain, almost unconscious. "ROARY!!!" I screamed. I ran toward her as fast as I could, and right before I reached her I got a push so hard that I skidded across the floor. "Jacob," she said in a whisper. Her voice sounded vulnerable and scared. She had 3 lines scraped across her face, and her head was bruised really bad. She was holding her hand and stomachache in pain. I looked more closely and her white shirt was stained with bright red blood. "Roary! What did they do to you?" "I don't know who was here, but they threw me at the wall. Strong people. Very strong people. Stabbed me with a fork and, and, and they shot me right, right, right here." She pointed to the bleeding spot on her shirt. "They did that to you. I got to call 911." Right when I said that Hannah came in running with the police. I closed my phone and put it in my pocket-once again. "Okay we are here." "Oh, dear, we nee to get her to the hospital right a way. Apparently to this damage on her right rib, that she got shot. Pull in a bed and roll her off to the truck." I watched in disgust as they picked her up and put her on the bed. I literally almost threw up when blood dropped to the floor like a leaky faucet. It was just for that moment, but it was still truly disgusting. Hannah ran to me and hid her eyes in my pajama shirt. You know I didn't notice this, but she wasn't wearing a wig. I haven't seen her real hair since last Martin Luther King Jr. Day. What a weird day, right? In a matter of minutes, Roary was rushed to the hospital. I always imagined one of us getting hurt, but not severely like this. Maybe a broken finger or a nose bleed. And when I imagined anything serious enough for them to be taken to the hospital, I always saw them waving back from the ambulance truck. This right here, no one was waving back. Just an ambulance truck and a soft soft sob in the background. It was now 4:29 and my parents and sister were here. I tried telling them to let me go to the hospital to see Roary, but they kept on refusing. "But Hannah is going!" "Well, I'm sorry, but you are not Hannah." "Why won't you let me go?" "You don't know who is still out there, and what kind of crazies are at the hospital at 4 in the morning." I didn't like the way Mom used the word crazies against the people at the hospital because you don't exactly know who is at the hospital at the time. I remember when my grandparents were in the hospital at 4 in the morning when I was born. They didn't report any "crazies" as far as I now. "Well, fine then, but can we please go to our house? I don't want to sit here and think about Roary right now. Can we please just get some sleep? I was really hoping to sleep in tomorrow. it's our first weekend of the year!" "Fine, let's go. Get in the car. Marli! Get in the car." "But Mom!" Marli whined. "Gt your bu in the car now!" "Yeah, you heard her, you little baby!" "Jacob!" "Sorry!" "You will spend an hour in your room tomorrow." "Why because I called her what she is?" "Jacob, be quiet and get in in the car. You too Marli." "But-" "Now." "UUUGGGGHHHH!!!" Why doesn't she get any punishment? Just because she is a 4 year old doesn't mean that she's not a brat." "GUYS!!! I do not want to hear another word from either of you!" "But-" "Another word. Each word you speak I will give you 10 minutes in your rooms. Starting now." The ride home was short and quiet, making it extremely awkward. "So, my Sweet, how was your day other than you being locked in the school? Are you feeling better?" To make Mom mad, I took a piece of paper and just wrote No. I handed her the paper and she sighed. "Never mind." she said, quite irritated. "You know, what I really miss is you guys being so nice to each other. Oh wait, that's impossible because when in your lifetime have you guys ever been nice to each other? Yes, that's what I thought. If you guys would be nice to each other for one day, for one day, it would make me very happy." Oh no. This is a moment where Mom starts to cry. I hate it when she cries, because then Marli starts to cry because she just always has to copy. And then it just makes me want to call Marli a baby even more. Doesn't Mom know that brothers and sisters fight? Oh brother, here comes the tears. "Mom! Don't cry!" "I'm not crying, I am just talking wobbly." Heh! Talking wobbly is Mom's excuse for crying. "Okay then." "Let's just get out of the car now and I want you both to go to your rooms." I walked to my room, and Marli walked down the hall to her bedroom. I slammed my door on purpose so every one could hear how frustrated I was. I jumped onto my bed and shoved the pillow over my face. I hear my muffled ring tone and just hoped that it was my Grandma or something, not another hurt friend. I answered it to hear my sister's voice. "What do you want now?" "Why did you have to be such a big butt-face in the car. You made Mommy cry." "What phone are you on?" "Mommy's." "I wasn't a butt-face and why do you even care? Since you're just a 4 year old, you don't get any punishments. Gotta go, we aren't supposed to be talking to each other." I hung up the phone and threw it on my beanbag. All of a sudden, my door opened and Marli was standing there with her blankie and her night gown back on. "Can I sleep with you?" " No!" "Why not?" "Because you have your room for a reason." "But my room is scary." "Nothing is wrong with your room." "People keep on staring at me through the window." " There is no body in your window. we are on the 3rd floor." "Maybe it's a ghost." "There are no ghosts, this house is 6 years old." "Well there are!" "Get out of my room and ask Mom to tuck you in." "Fine. But I don't like this Jacob Greg." she said while wagging her finger at me. "Well, I don't care!" "Bye." "Goodnight. Shut my door!" From then on the night went pretty smoothly. Except, I had a bad dream. I had a nightmare that some body was sneaking in the window of Marli's room. He had a dark black hat with black hair. He had really blue eyes. Muddy sneakers and no socks. A faded, dirty jacket. A gun in the left pocket, a pocket knife in the right pocket, and a crumpled up newspaper in the back pocket. I watched him pick up Marli and throw her out the 3 story high window. Bloody drag marks were left on the carpet. It was a scary nightmare, and a pretty rude one to wake up to. I walked down the stairs to notice that the house was quiet. I checked the time and it was only 6:00. I guess that Mom and Dad were at the hospital again. Mom and Dad have been at the hospital an awful lot lately. What could possibly be wrong with a 38 year old and a 40 year old? I walked back up stairs and went into Marli's room. I opened the door slowly and quietly so I wouldn't awake her. Her room was pretty dark with the curtains pulled over the window, but where was that breeze coming from. Uuugghhh, she left open her window. I sat next to her body under the blankets and shook her light body. I pulled over the covers and she wasn't there. What!? What!? I scurried all around her room for her, but no sign of Marli! The window! The window. Oh, gosh the window! I turned on the lights and didn't dare look at the carpet as I moved to the window. I pulled the curtains away and revealed bloody drag marks. I looked at the carpet and there were blood and mud stains on the carpet. Oh yes, and there is the vomit stain that I just made as well. My mind was spinning. Marli had been kidnapped. I didn't let her sleep in my bedroom. I didn't believe that the window was showing a a person. I didn't tell her that I loved her before we went to bed. I was fighting with her. But worst of all. I stood there watching the whole thing happen. I picked up my phone to call Mom and Dad, but then I remembered that they weren't aloud to put cell phones on in the hospital. I sat down to think what to do. I think it's pretty insane that my sister has been kidnapped. That's not even possible. Her and Roary. Oh no! Roary! Roary and Marli in a matter of two hours. This is insane! It's probably the same person that hurt Roary. I'm guessing tht he was there part of the time when we were over at her house, that's how he knew to get Marli. Then, all of the sudden, my phone is ringing. I answer it reluctantly. I hear chatter in the background. "Hello?" I asked into the phone. "Hi, Jacob. It's me, Hannah." And I regret that I even did this, but I started to cry into the phone. "My sister was kidnapped last night and no one knows about it but me." Sob, sob, sob. "And there is blood stains on her pretty white carpet. And I had a dream about it, but I'm guessing it was real because I saw him throw her out the window." Cry, cry, cry. "And she told me that she wanted to sleep in my room because she didn't like the feeling in her room. She said she saw somebody looking in through the window." Breath, breath, breath. "And I told her to shut my door and shut up because we weren't supposed to talk to each other." "Your little sister was kidnapped?" she asked in a really loud and worried voice. "Marli's gone?" "Yes." "Oh my God, my sweet little angel!" "Yeah." "I'm calling the police." "Oh, do that. I'mcalling the police, too. Talk to you in a little bit. Bye." I called the police immediately after I hung up the phone. They said that they would be there in about 10 minutes, and I should shut and lock every thing and stay put. At 6:15 the police startled me when they knocked on the door and asked me where my sister's room was. I told them to follow me up to her bedroom. "Is this her uummm, vomit?" Thery asked. "Uh, no that's mine. Sorry, I get ancy around blood." "Oh, that's too bad, we could have gotten some DNA from it." "Why do you need DNA from it, if you already know that it was my sister?" "Well, it could also be the kidnapper's vomit." "Okay, enough talk about the vomit, and please identify the snatcher. My best friend was hurt last night too, if you remember." "Oh, I remember, especially that it happened 2 hours ago." "Mmmhhh." "Well, where are your parents?" "They're at the hospital." "Are they hurt, too?" "Oh, no no no. They have just been hanging around there." "Okay, well when your parents get home, give us a holler and we will have to speak with them." "Okay." I walked back down the steps. I sat down on the couch and turned on the TV. The news was on and I almost changed the channel, but "There has been an insane man kidnapping children in Rosebell, a little town on the shore. So far, a 10 year old girl named Roary Luoise Harvel was found in her basement, bleeding and bruising to death. A 4 year old girl was just reported to be kidnapped out of her own bedroom, leaving a track of blood. Triplets, Ally, Howy, and Annabelle Chase were kidnapped last wek, the age of 7, and 1 19 year old was seen walking out and stabbed in the dark. Five people kidnapped and injured, one deadly injured. Let's work together to find this criminal by putting up security cameras and alarm systems." I turned off the TV and shut my eyes for a couple minutes. I heard the door open and I turned around to see my parents. They were completely worried. "What is going on here? Why are there police in the driveway?" "Mom," Oh, no, the tears..."Marli's been kidnapped." "What?" "Marli's been kidnapped." My parents started to ball and I tried to tell them to go up to her room, but I couldn't even hear myself over their crying. "MOM! GO UP IN HER ROOM!! THE POLICE ARE WAITING!!!!" They ran up the stairs as fast as they could, and when they were out of my sight, I once again heard the sobs of my parents. That weekend had been the scariest weekend of my life. Well, for then, anyways. It had also been the most busiest, dramatic, and insane weekends of my life. First, on my first day of school, I got locked in the school, and my best friend was hurt. On Saturday, my sister was kidnapped and we were left with no resemblance of her. On Sunday, we went to court as victims and as witnesses for Roary's dad. Roary's mom has not yet showed up. I still highly doubt that she even knows that Roary was hurt at their own house. Suspicious that her mom wasn't there when Roary was hurt and how she's probably avoiding the whole situation right now, right? Very suspicious I think. It's now Monday, and my mom's not getting ready to drive Marli to kindergarten. She's just sitting at the couch looking through files and papers from the court, personally given to her by the judge. She sighs in a deep and heavy breath, voice all shaky as if about to cry- again. I don't like to see my parents this way. Why not? Because I really am not a mean person. I like to see my parents laughing and smiling, not crying and frowning. I snuck down the stairs as quietly as I could, and then I hear my mom's voice so dreary and shaky,"Why are you up so early young man?" "Uuuummm, couldn't sleep." "Oh my Sweet, me too. I have been sitting here since dinner." I saw a flashback from last night's cleanup after dinner. "Yeah, well, that sucks." "Yeah, I guess it does suck." Wow. Mom never lets me use that word - ever. Maybe I should start using words I'm not aloud to. Well, now's your chance. But, no I can't take advantage of Mom like this, maybe some other time. "Well, I think I'm going to make my self a smoothie." "There's no banana's left." "Uh! Who ate them?" I knew I shouldn't have asked that question, because I knew exactly who did eat them. The word Marli always made Mom cry. "I'm sorry, Mom. I didn't mean to." "It's okay Jacob. Why don't I take you out for a smoothie?" "Uuuhhh, okay!" "But you're going to have to get ready for school before hand, you know. Go start the shower and I'll bring up your clothes." I ran up the stairs and into the bathroom. I turned on the shower and got right in. Once I got ready, I got into the front seat of Mom's station wagon. I dared myself to look back at Marli's car-seat. There it was, a soft, fluffy, pink, flowery car-seat with the straps unbuckled. I remembered me having to always buckling her because she wasn't yet strong enough to push the red button back and forth. Once we got there, I ate a banana and blueberry twist while mom had a peach strawberry. "Jacob?" My mom asked me. "Yeah." "Me and your father-" "Your father and I." I corrected her. "It's not polite to say your name in front of some body Else's." She sighed. "Your father and I," she said dramatically,"will not be home when you get off the bus. We have to go to court all week. You will be riding the bus with Zack for the whole week." "Oh okay." "But I promise that me and your father-" "Your father and I!" I said a bit too loud. "JACOB! THIS IS NOT A TIME TO BE EDUCATIONAL!" She yelled at me at the top of her lungs Every body stared at her and I slid down under the booth. She laughed a bogus laugh that turned into a sigh. "Let's go, Jacob." We hopped in the car once again and drove to school. When I walked into the school hallway, I felt that unwelcoming feeling once more. It felt pretty lonely with out walking in with Roary, Hannah, and Zack. I put my head down, slightly glancing out the windows until my head was finally up again. I walked further down the hallway, looking out the windows with the corner of my eyes until something strange caught my eye. An old man with a small dog. Hannah wasn't just seeing things. I had to find Hannah. I rushed down the hallways looking in all directions. I finally spot her at her locker, talking and laughing with some guy she probably thought was cute. I tapped on her shoulder, but she completely ignored me, like I wasn't even there. Finally, I got an idea. "Hannah! There's a spider on your leg!" She screamed and jumped around, started to cry. I then told her, "Hannah I was kidding, relax. I need to show you something." I took her to the window where the man and his dog were sitting. "Hannah! Look, there's that man and the dog you were talking about on Friday." I pointed to them outside. "Ha, ha, very funny. Can I go now, I was talking to a really cute guy." "Wait, what? What do you mean 'ha, ha very funny?' He's right there." "No he's not." "Yes he is! Here come here, we'll just go outside and see." "No, Jacob, we'll get in trouble. We have 2 minutes and we haven't even unpacked yet. Forget about it." "Fine." I walked to my classroom, suddenly greeted by ,my teacher. "Jacob, I'm so sorry." She gave me a hug and refused to let go. "Yeah." That's all I said. ""You don't have to sit through class today, you and your friends can play outside for the day. I know you guys have a lot of stuff on your mind." "Uh huh. Did you hear about Roary?" "Yes, I went to go see her yesterday after church." "That's great," I said gloomily. "Why don't you go get Hannah and Zack and tell them that you are more then welcome to leave the classroom. I walked down the hallway to find Zack at the water fountain. He looked up at me and then stood up to greet me. "Sorry, dude." He said, and he meant it too. "It's okay. Hey Miss Deller just told me that we can play hookie today." "She told you that you could skip school? She's a teacher, Jake." "Yes, a teacher who told me that we can leave the classroom whenever we want." "Are you sure?" "Yes,she said that because we might need to get some stuff off of our minds." "If you say so." "We got to go get Hannah." "She's talking to Brandon." "Oh gosh." I rubbed my forehead and shook my head. "Oh, there she is!" he said, pointing his finger at Hannah in a purple wig. "Hannah!" "What now?" "We were just telling you that we are aloud to play hookie today!!!" "That's what I said, wasn't it?" :If you say so." With that, we walked outside to the courtyard. I got out my notebook and was ready to draw some ideas. "Guys, we know that it's not the same without Roary, but we have to do the best we can. We need to find out a little bit more about this school. We already know it's like 200 years old, but we need more to it. There is something wrong with this place." "I agree with him. I know I was doubtful about not having Roary around. I mean with out her, I have no one to copy off of and I am the only girl now, but this is only temporary. And Roary is one person, we're all another. We are still a team, so we can't just quit now." "Yeah, I know things aren't going the way we every imagined, but that's the way it's going to be, so we just have to deal with it. I say we get to the bottom of this right here right now." "Thanks, guys." I said. "And I know this is completely different on what we just discussed, but we will still have time to do this with Roary, because we had her stitches in today and everything is fine. She only needs a couple of days, and she will just need help with some stuff, like she broke her arm and twisted her ankle, but that's really it. We get to see her on Friday!" "Really, that's great, Zack!" "Oh yes!" We cheered on, and we discussed what we would do and how we would do it and where we would do it. "Guys, you can't come to my house, we have our house flooded with FBI and everything is a mess." I said to them. "My relatives are coming in tonight, I'm sorry but, my grandparents are slobs and they took all 6 extra rooms. I would, I swear." Hannah and I looked at Zack to see if he could have us over. "Guys, you know my apartment isn't big. It's just my room and my parents' room." "We need a clubhouse," I said, I mean we need one bad." "Jacob's right. We can't keep going to eachother's houses." "I think I know an awesome place for our clubhouse to be." Zack suggested. "Really! Where?" "Well before I say, It's gonna cost you, big." "How big?" I asked worriedly. "Three hundred dollars." "WHAT!?" "Three hundred dollars." "Don't say it again!!!" "That's insane Zack. There's no way." "Oh, trust me, there's a way." "And what must that be?" "Well, we live in New Jersey. It's October, and we get snow here at this time of year." "Yeah, we get snow. But I want to know how we get money." "Eh, I'm getting there. We can shovel driveways and sidewalks for some extra money." "Hhhhmmmm, that's not a bad idea." "Hey,"Hannah said, "my uncle works at the town hall and he is always trying to find people to do extra stuff around town. A regular shoveler would charge a lot of money to shovel the town sidewalks, and we can charge half that price and still get enough money to pay it off." "Uhhh, but what exactly are we paying off?" I asked. "There is an apartment building that was shut down because of vermin issues. It is still owned by the same owner, but he really wants to sell it. He said that he would take 300 per room. Then we're on our own. Since it's from the 1800's, it's pretty small. There is only 8 rooms, a dining room, the attic, the bathroom, the kitchen, and four bedrooms. We can pull it off so easily." At the end of school, my mom called me to tell me that I was going to go home with Zack because she was in court. So Zack and I decided to go take a tour of the apartment building. When we walked inside, the apartment smelled musty, like an old basement or cellar. Termites had eaten right through some of the doors, so we could see the inside of the rooms with out even opening the door. There was mold boarding the edges of the walls, and the floor boards creaked pretty badly, but we assumed that we could do something to fix it. The apartment owner was a very nice man. When we reached his house to talk about the building, he welcomed us with 2 cups of hot cocoa and a plate full of chocolate chip cookies. He said that we were more than welcome to come by any time to discuss things, and we accepted his offer. We started to talk about electricity and the water and if it was safe to use and where there was the land limits and trespassing zones. He said that most of that if not all of that would be in the contracts, but we got a little help from him. He said, "Well, if you do go through with this plan, there are some things a group of kids need help with. Like the electricity and the water. I know a local electrician who works super cheap, he's always looking for something to do. If you could hook him up with the place, he would probably ask for $500 for the whole place. He's pretty good like that. He was my college student in engineering, he's mighty fine, mighty fine. And if you ever need help if the electricity goes out or something, you can always call me, I cn throw in some help and hot wiring for free. Now the water is something I am brain dead with. I don't nor ever have known what the heck to do with the water. I say just build a trough and an outhouse and live on with our lives. Saving the world and money...it's just easier that way. But if you plan to use this quite a bit, I would recommend someone coming in and installing a toilet. You know you can find those kinds of things at Gary's junkyard in Wayman." "Well thanks for that nice tip, but there's no way we can raise that much money. The grand total will be like $4,000! I'm sorry but I don't think we can even repair the house." "Well, maybe to get you started you can mow my lawn and rake my leaves every week. I have the whole woods around me to rake. It's a $60 job every week. It's not going to start snowing for 6 weeks. That's $360 right there. Then you can shovel my driveway for $100 every week. That's $1,600 there. So you can have $1,960 in 4 months." Right then I found out that we hit the jack pot. He was willing to pay us $14 to shovel his driveway every day. This thought relieved me because I thought that we wouldn't have any customers. And if that thought was correct, then he is our best buyer. I would have never believed in something luckier than that. When we got back to Zack's house, we were going to start making flyers and business cards for our leaf raking, mowing lawns, and shoveling driveways business. We decided that we were going to make a fortune. The owner opened the door for us when we excused ourselves from the meeting. We left with a paper plate full of his delicious cookies. My parents called and said that they were being kept later than expected so I had to sleep over at Zack's house. And I meant for it to sound like I was depressed because not to be rude or anything,, but his apartment is small. For him and his parents, there are 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, a kitchen and a living room. I had to sleep on the floor crammed up against the wall where crackers and popcorn crumbs lined the trim. When morning came, me, Zack, and his parents sat down at the kitchen table and ate donuts and cereal. I forced to swallow the gas station bought donuts that tasted like cardboard. After that we crammed into the 1 door car and drove to school. When we got to school, we saw something that made us both incredibly happy. Roary! She was in a wheelchair and her arm was in a cast. She had a dark bruises every where that shadowed and drained out the color of her face. Some of her fingernails were purple and some were ripped off. Her neck was stained red from the blood that flooded out of her ear that night. She smiled a crooked smile at us and spoke in a scratchy voice. "Zack! Jacob!" "Roary!" "Hi guys. I'm back from the hospital." "We can see." "I wanted to see you guys, and I was perfectly fine, so I asked them to put me in wheelchair, and they did! So, how's it going?" "It's going great." "Cool. Guess what? In just a week I get to have crutches!!" "That's great, that's great." "Why do you act so glum?" she asked. "Oh, I'm not glum, I just want to know when you get off of crutches." "Oh, don't worry. It will be 4 weeks." "Exactly?" "Exactly." she repeated. "Well, than that means we can celebrate on Halloween, because that's the day you get off." "Hhhhmmmm...." Zack hummed. "What?" I asked. "Well, since we'll be camping on Halloween, I have an idea." "What idea?" "Well, since we will be alone and have no parents to tell us what to do - well there's jut something that's been on my mind." "I don't know what has been on your mind, but I definitely know what's been on my mind." "We can sneak into the school," we both said. Roary looked at us uneasily. "Guys, I don't think that's a great idea. If we get caught, well, my reputation will be completely ruined. I can't risk that." "Roary, how would we even be caught anyways. After all, we will be in investigating uniforms." "We don't have uniforms, Genius." "Yeah, well what if I said that Hannah could make us some." "Where are we going to get the money?" Zack glanced at me with a half-grin. He winked at Roary and turned to her. "We made a business." "You what? Isn't that kind of, greedy." "What do you mean greedy?" "Well, like begging for money. We're just kids." "What if we told you that we already have a promise of $1,600." "Well, Zack found an apartment building that e can keep. For only $1,200. We have repairing to do, but he said that he will work with us for free for just a little time. Then we can get more customers that will ask us weekly or even daily. We figured that we would have some left over if we create pacts with our customers, promising us our labor. Then we can give the money to Hannah for equipment, and give the rest of the money to the owner. If we have any money left over then, we can use it to buy more equipment." "Wow!" "Yep!" "Okay, well know I got to get to the counselor. He's going to help me get around and everything." "Okay." "So, can you help me get up the stairs?" "Yeah, sure." Me and Zack lifted the wheelchair up to the top of the stairs. We were out of breath when we got to the top because I have never lifted something that heavy before. (I didn't know that Roary weighed so much.) We rolled her into the classroom where Miss Trew greeted us with her welcoming smile. "Hello Roary! I didn't think that you were coming back until next week! How are you?" "Hi Miss Trew. I'm fine." "Well that's great. Today we are going to just take it easy. You know play some games, do some review, nothing that's too hard, we understand that you can't concentrate as well, so you just take your time." "Yeah, yeah thanks. Thank you." "Well, when you come in, we have a little surprise for you. The kids signed a card and got you some flowers. We all feel very happy that you are back with us." "Well thank you Miss Trew. I'll go in there right now." I rolled Roary into the classroom and set her down at the reading table. I went to my seat in front of the classroom and got out my agenda. I copied the board and put my stuff away. I started to think about me and my sister, and I knew that it would be a long month.
***********************************
It's been four weeks since my sister was kidnapped. It's also been four weeks since Roary was stabbed three times in her house. Things were going to change around here. No more helping Roary walk, not as many court sessions, and we get ghost hunt once again. Today was Halloween night, and we were going camping on the shore. We were going trick or treating until our bags were overflowing with candy. It's the one night I get to have all the junk food I want. Zack and oary were 50 feet behind the shore setting up the tent. Hannah ran to the store to get some pop and water. I was building a moat around the tent. You know it was pretty cool, our little area. We were going to host a bonfire, roaast marshmallows, tell ghost stories. It will be so much fun. Once everything was ready, we all sat around the little fire and told scstory was true.ary stories. I could tell that we were all pretty scared when Roary told her story, because her story was true.
